Remember when October meant Halloween episodes of your favorite sitcoms? When Elvira popped up hosting every spooky special on TV? When artists actually put out Halloween music?
These days you'd be hard pressed to find any of it, and you can largely thank the slow death of network TV. But fear not. (Actually, in the spirit of the season, be very afraid.) Network sitcoms used to air weekly, which meant somebody in the writers' room had to reckon with the episode landing the last week of October. That's how we got Halloween classics from The Office, Roseanne and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
When a whole season drops at once, no episode lands on Halloween, so nobody bothers dressing up for it. Elvira has all but hung up her beehive, leaving a Mistress of the Dark-sized void every fall. The RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars winner just released Till Death Do Us Part, a Halloween-themed LP led by the single "Ghost on the Moon." She's also keeping up her annual tradition of a Halloween special on her YouTube channel, where the new album gets its moment, too.
"It's a heartfelt marriage of spooky synths and acoustic love-strumming," Mattel said in a statement of the record. TV may have abandoned Halloween, but at least someone is picking up the spooky mantle Elvira made famous.
