President Donald Trump has addressed the interest in his hair, offering an anecdote intended to dispel the idea he potentially wears a wig – which did not entirely add up. The president’s signature blonde hair has been the subject of internet ridicule during his second term, notably when a bald spot was noticed last year as he host South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House and again when it looked unexpectedly thin and dishevelled during an Oval Office event on maternal healthcare this May. Then, in early August, the 80-year-old delivered a speech in Las Vegas, Nevada, for which he arrived sporting a blonder, thicker mane than has been seen for some time, leading his detractors to speculate he was wearing a weave and his supporters to praise him for “aging in reverse.” Speaking in the Rose Garden on a humid Wednesday evening, the president told a story about his delivering a speech in support of Ohio Republican Sen.
Bernie Moreno during which he encountered “the worst weather I think I’ve ever experienced outside of maybe a hurricane we had in Florida one time.” The occasion in question appeared to be the Buckeye Values PAC Rally, which was held near Dayton International Airport in Moreno’s state on March 16, 2024 and which The Independent’s John Bowden attended and described at the time as “a windy day in late-late winter,” noting that people left early because of the “cold” conditions – and to beat the traffic. Trump remembered: “I went up to the speaker, and it was blowing so hard. But that night, they found out I did not wear a wig because if you did, it was not gonna be on your head very long.
They blew off the stage, and they were 50 yards, like a half a football field down. They were gone as I walked up.” However, one tell-tale detail badly undermines the president’s recollection of the event: press photographs show he was wearing a red MAGA baseball cap that day. Trump also attempted to put an end to the question of whether or not he wears a wig during the 2016 presidential campaign when he appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show and allowed host Jimmy Fallon to ruffle his hair to prove it was real, a viral moment the comedian later said he regretted taking part in.
The publication of Michael Wolff’s controversial book Fire and Fury in 2018 revealed the “mechanics” of the president’s hairstyle, citing his daughter Ivanka Trump’s observations. She revealed that the dye her father uses tends to darken with time and outlined the “elaborate architectural process... of maintaining that dome over nothing.” Wolff wrote: “She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate – a contained island after scalp reduction surgery – surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.” Another member of the Trump family, his estranged niece Mary Trump, recently addressed his latest makeover by noting that the president’s own father, Fred Trump, became obsessed with losing his hair in later life. However, he looked like Herby the Dentist from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer [1964].
