Being a Magic: The Gathering fan has become an intense hobby. While the beauty of Magic lies in its variety, as the game offers ample choice of formats and ways to play, the quick pace of new set releases has affected the Magic experience overall. One of the most obvious consequences is that Magic sets don't stay around as long as they used to: Marvel Super Heroes still felt new when Bilbo Baggins came strolling into the picture with The Hobbit's release just seven weeks later.
Reality Fracture is by far one of the best Magic sets to come out in 2026. It brought a long-running storyline to a close (even if it wasn’t very satisfying), culminating in the death of Jace Beleren, one of the game’s most iconic characters. Moreover, in terms of the Limited format, Reality Fracture is surely the best set of the year.
Limited play (Draft or Sealed) is one of the most common ways to experience a new Magic set, as you play only with cards from that set. Limited players have been singing the praises of Reality Fracture since its debut, but unfortunately that's ending soon, making way for a new Universes Beyond set: Star Trek. Reality Fracture was released on Oct. 2, with prerelease events starting on Sept. 25.
It's the sixth of seven Magic sets released in 2026 (eight if you count Mystery Booster Commander Edition). Reality Fracture succeeds in translating flavor and story into interesting gameplay mechanics. The most notable element is the presence of the Jace planeswalker tokens created through the Empower Jace mechanic.
These are available to all colors and have a big impact on the set's Limited gameplay, but that's not all that Reality Fracture has going on. The five Hexhaven schools, the militaristic colleges created by Jace in his warped Echoverse, are all fun and interesting build-around archetypes for Limited. The set also includes five more color pairs, and while not every strategy is equally supported, they all have the potential to form the basis for a good Draft or Sealed deck.
Reality Fracture offers balanced, interesting gameplay with a powerful card pool that has motivated Limited players of all levels to test their mettle with the set. And it's all going to last a mere six weeks. Most local game stores (LGS) will stop running Reality Fracture Limited events, and the same happens on Magic Arena — usually, but not this time (more on that later).
