Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, has pledged to stop attacking top Belgian officials in searing comments, shortly after dubbing the country's health minister a "loser." White said he had promised Belgium's foreign minister, Maxime Prévot, he would "refrain from making derogatory statements targeting Belgian officials and would direct those complaints to the government directly as a first course of action." Prévot summoned the U.S. envoy after White posted an AI-generated image of Belgian health chief, Frank Vandenbroucke, to social media and asked "who’s the biggest LOSER in Belgium?" Vandenbroucke's face is superimposed what appears to be a cigar and then appears separately in a frame, which bears the words, "Schaadt iedere vorm van levensvreugde.” This roughly translates to, "destroys every form of fun." The AI-created image is no longer available on White's Instagram account. Prévot called the post "unacceptable" and summoned White to the foreign ministry. On Monday, Prévot urged the American envoy to stop "personally targeting Belgian officials" in public remarks, saying they could fray relations between the two countries.
White said he had a "very frank conversation" with Prévot, and the two diplomats had agreed that "working together we will achieve great things for the United States and for Belgium." This is a developing story and will be updated.
