Some of the billionaires behind Liverpool were present for the opening match of Andoni Iraola’s Anfield reign but were given more food-for-thought than the feast they might have been expecting. Nottingham Forest were full value for the second 2-2 draw of Iraola’s tenure as Liverpool demonstrated they need sturdier foundations as well as the decoration of £123m Bradley Barcola. Oliver Glasner’s team, like Newcastle last week, exploited Liverpool’s defensive frailties regularly and were on course for a third successive Premier League win at Anfield before summer signing Víctor Muñoz salvaged another late draw for the hosts with a superb equaliser.
Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White twice put Forest ahead only for Alexander Isak and Muñoz to level. Watching on from the directors’ box, uncomfortably at times one would imagine, were Liverpool’s prospective new vice-chair Amit Bhatia and his father-in-law, the Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia and Mittal, who has given financial backing to 1892 Holdings acquiring a 38% stake in Liverpool, were the invited guests of John W Henry.
Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, other members of the consortium, were not in attendance. The club’s principal owner was present to witness the start of a brave new era at Anfield. Turns out it looked very much like the old one, even down to Dominik Szoboszlai ending the contest at right-back.
After a rousing tribute before kick-off to the late Kevin Keegan Liverpool were soon exposed by the pace and sharp movement of the Forest attack. Long balls released Ndoye behind the home defence twice in the opening six minutes and, while the attacking midfielder lost his footing on both occasions, Liverpool failed to deal with the source of their problems. Alexis Mac Allister created the first real opening of the game with an incisive pass into Cody Gakpo, who was denied by an excellent Neco Williams tackle, but otherwise the most persistent threat in the first half came from the visitors.
Ola Aina and Ndoye combined to give Igor Jesus an early opportunity from four yards out. The striker’s shot was deflected wide by the outstretched boot of summer arrival Jérémy Jacquet. Ndoye then headed wide of the far post from James McAtee’s inviting cross and Igor Jesus had another shot blocked with Gibbs-White screaming for a pass in front of goal.
The breakthrough was not long in coming. Having cleared a Forest corner, Liverpool were undone by Matz Sels’s long clearance over their defence to Igor Jesus. The striker held up the goalkeeper’s delivery despite the close attentions of Jacquet and Mac Allister to find Gibbs-White, who rolled a simple pass to the unmarked Ndoye.
