Per multiple reports, the Minnesota Vikings signed their longtime safety Harrison Smith to a one-year contract. Smith, 37, has only played for the Vikings since they drafted him in the first round of the 2012 draft. He's earned All-Pro honors twice and has made six Pro Bowl appearances.
Smith's contract will include incentives, much like the Los Angeles Rams agreed to with defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Donald can make up to a max of $30 million if he hits all of his incentives, including winning the Super Bowl. He can make a max of $16 million if the Vikings win the Super Bowl. "Six-time Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith and the Vikings agreed on a one-year contract to bring him back for a 15th NFL season, sources say," Pelissero wrote on X. "The deal has a base value of $8 million and can be worth up to $16M with incentives — a compromise to keep a legacy player in the fold.
"Harrison Smith’s one-year deal with the Vikings includes $4 million in per-game active bonuses and another $4M in incentives tied to postseason performance, with the max $16M unlocked if the Vikings win the Super Bowl." Last week, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters he was in contact with Harrison. The safety never announced his retirement, but wasn't sure if he wanted to return for a 15th season in the league. Safety was a position of need for Minnesota before the regular season, and it's adding a player who has thrived in defensive coordinator Brian Flores' system.
Smith has appeared in 207 games and started in 203 games. He's recorded 1,180 tackles, 21.5 sacks, 106 passes defensed and 39 interceptions in his career. He'll join fellow safeties Theo Jackson, Jacob Thomas, Joshua Metellus, and rookie Jakobe Thomas.
