Kyler Murray got off to a rough start in his first game with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. He threw an interception on his very first pass of the game and finished with 3-for-5 for 18 yards, along with nine rushing yards on two attempts, before going down with a scary head injury. During the first quarter, Murray scrambled toward the sideline on a third-down play and took a hard hit to the head from Packers defender Javon Bullard.
Murray lay motionless on the field for several minutes and displayed a fencing response, a reflex commonly associated with head trauma, before being ruled out for the remainder of the game with a concussion. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed Murray's status on Monday. "He came in feeling pretty good today," O'Connell said.
"He is in the protocol, so we'll defer to the medical folks and that protocol for how the week goes. We'll just take it a day at a time." McCarthy in the preseason.
Losing your starter that early in the season is brutal for any team, and it's a tough break for a player like Murray, who was hoping for a bounce-back season after struggling the last few years in Arizona. Luckily for Minnesota, they may feel comfortable enough rolling with Wentz for the time being. He stepped in for Murray and finished 12 of 19 for 133 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions, leading the Vikings to a dramatic 39-22 comeback victory over their rival Packers.
The defense stepped up in the second half as well, but Wentz looked poised and delivered several big plays to Justin Jefferson.
