The FDA has given a nationwide recall of frozen pasta sold at Walmart its most serious risk classification over concerns the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall of bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine on September 15 followed routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which found the product may contain Listeria. Producer Gias Foods has stopped distributing the affected product while the company and FDA investigate the possible source of the contamination.
Now, the product has been given a Class I designation, which means there is a “reasonable probability” that use of or exposure to a recalled product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death, according to the FDA. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, frail or older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
No illnesses had been reported as of when the recall was announced. This is a developing story and will be updated.
