The White House is facing criticism after sharing a "Magic Deportation Bus" image styled after the children's educational series The Magic School Bus while promoting Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests, in the latest example of the Trump administration using popular culture to advance its immigration message. The post, published on Monday on the official White House account, referenced the show's famous "Please let this be a normal field trip..." catchphrase and linked to a report highlighting a recent ICE operation in the Washington, D.C., region. That wording references a recurring line from the television series, in which student Arnold Perlstein expresses concern as the class sets off on another science-themed journey.
The altered image instead connected the children’s show to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation. The White House post had attracted more than 1.7 million views, but has prompted objections from critics who accused the administration of trivializing deportations and misusing a franchise designed for children. The progressive monitoring account PatriotTakes responded: “MAGA ruins everything,” while other users questioned the decision to associate a school bus and educational characters with people being detained.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment. The graphic was based on imagery associated with the Netflix revival of The Magic School Bus, but the altered version retained the cartoon’s distinctive yellow bus, blue background and red title lettering, but replaced the original name with “The Magic Deportation Bus.” The image also appeared to have been modified to make the people seated in the rear of the bus more visible. The figures were shown wearing handcuffs, while the words “Blast Off!” appeared above the windshield.
Alongside the post, the White House shared a Fox News report headlined: “ICE quietly arrests jaw-dropping number of illegal immigrants in massive D.C.-area operation.” That report concerned Operation Safe Community, an immigration enforcement effort spanning Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland.” It comes as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested nearly 50,000 people during July, the highest single monthly arrest total during the second Trump administration. The criticism has focused partly on the White House’s decision to connect immigration detention with a franchise intended to teach science to children.
Created as a book series and later adapted for television, The Magic School Bus follows a class led by Ms. Frizzle as the students use a fantastical vehicle to explore subjects including the human body, space and the natural world. The original animated show aired on PBS between 1994 and 1997, while a reboot, The Magic School Bus Rides Again, debuted on Netflix in 2017.
Newsweek reached out to the story’s original publisher Scholastic via email for comment. The Magic School Bus graphic is part of a broader communications strategy under which official administration accounts have adopted memes, music and entertainment references to promote immigration enforcement. The White House, DHS and ICE have previously published posts invoking Spider-Man, South Park and viral social-media trends.
