An elderly couple have been accused of shooting dead their New York Times executive son-in-law in a suburban sports park in Dublin, southeast of San Francisco. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, of Dublin, was pronounced dead at the scene after being found by a Dublin Police Service (DPS) sergeant with multiple gunshot wounds in the middle of a parking lot shortly after 3 p.m. local time on September 26. According to a DPS press release, his parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, aged 77, were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
The police did not confirm a motive for the shooting. McKinsey was the director of engineering for the games department at The New York Times, according to the newspaper. According to his LinkedIn account, he had studied computer science at the Georgia Institute of Technology and later at the University of California, Berkley.
According to court documents cited by other media, McKinsey and his wife Candice Jang had a turbulent relationship and were locked in a custody dispute that was set to resume this week. Both had filed requests for domestic violence restraining orders against the other, The Mercury News reported, citing court documents. Both McKinsey, who was transgender, and Jang alleged that the other was ill-suited to care for their children.
They were living separately and had been married for more than a decade. This is a developing story.
