As Roger Marshall fights to retain his Senate seat, his marriage to Laina offers a glimpse into his life beyond politics.

Kansas Republican Roger Marshall is fighting for a second term in the U.S. Senate, with recent polling showing a close race against Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton. Away from politics, Marshall has been married to his wife, Laina Marshall, for more than four decades.

The couple raised four children together and now have five grandchildren, according to Marshall's official Senate biography. Laina has also been part of Marshall's life throughout his medical and political careers, with the senator frequently referring publicly to their marriage, family, and shared Christian faith. Marshall is a physician who has represented Kansas in the Senate since January 2021.

Before entering the Senate, he represented Kansas' 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives from 2017 until 2021. A fifth-generation Kansas farm kid, Marshall became the first member of his family to attend college. He earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Kansas State University before receiving his medical degree from the University of Kansas.

He subsequently worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist in Great Bend, Kansas, for 25 years and delivered more than 5,000 babies, according to his Senate webpage. He also served for seven years in the U.S. Army Reserve, rising to the rank of captain.

Marshall's 2026 reelection campaign emphasizes his conservative record, particularly on agriculture, healthcare, border security, energy, and the cost of living. His campaign lists support for the Laken Riley Act and the Build the Wall Act—both immigration and border-security measures—among his border-security credentials, while highlighting legislation aimed at rural health care and reducing costs for farmers. He’s also highlighted tax policy as a central economic issue.

Earlier this year, Marshall promoted measures reducing taxes on tips and overtime pay and expanding tax credits for families. His official Senate biography describes him as a “congressional leader on health care and agriculture policies” as well as a prominent opponent of abortion and supporter of Second Amendment rights. Marshall is facing a much tighter race than Republicans have traditionally encountered in Kansas.
