The Ballon d'Or winner will be announced in London on 26 October - but who is going to win it? Bookmakers have Spain winger Lamine Yamal and England captain Harry Kane very close together as clear favourites. Lamine Yamal won La Liga with Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain, while Kane scored 73 goals for German champions Bayern Munich and England.
Eight-time winner Lionel Messi, of Argentina and Inter Miami, and Real Madrid's France forward Kylian Mbappe are the other probable candidates. Or how about one of Paris St-Germain's back-to-back European champions? BBC Sport asked several of its football experts who they think should take home the award.
Goal, assist... goal-kick - Kane underlines Ballon d'Or credentials Lamine Yamal 'completes football' at 19 as Argentina betray Messi How PSG's Ballon d'Or duo are pushing each other on European football expert Guillem Balague: Can you imagine this Ballon d'Or not won by a PSG player or a Spanish player? So gone is Kylian Mbappe. The PSG players, there are so many of them that deserve it - Fabian Ruiz, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha.
So the vote is going to be split. There is only one Spaniard who deserves it, and that's Lamine Yamal, who has given us individual performances, collective trophies, and has that aura. European football expert Julien Laurens: I think he was the best player in Europe last season, especially in the Champions League where he was outstanding.
He helped lead the team to another title, a back-to-back one. He got the penalty in the final, scored in both semi-finals, in the quarter-final, and in the last 16. He was amazing in those huge, huge games where you want your best players to step up.
He deserves to win the Ballon d'Or for being the best player in the world all the way up to the World Cup. He won't win it, unfortunately, because Lamine Yamal, for the player he is and how entertaining and spectacular he is, didn't really shine at the World Cup, even if Spain won it. He didn't really do that well in the Champions League for Barcelona, getting knocked out early.
