On August 1, 2026, Haylee Davis, 23, attended an estate sale in Biscoe, North Carolina, and was so excited to find an old Canon camera amongst the lot. Davis loves practicing her photography on digital cameras, as she told Newsweek that she has “always enjoyed more analogue hobbies.” She managed to purchase the camera for just $10 at the estate sale, and she soon realized it had a memory card filled with images. Some pictures seemed to document different adventures and trips.” The memory card was storing eight gigabytes of photos, with several folders spanning the years.
Davis could not believe her eyes when she opened the eighth folder and saw a photo of her fourth-grade class on the screen. In the center of the photo, a 9-year-old Davis was seen standing in her school classroom. I think what hit me the most was seeing that little version of myself at a time when I had no idea what life was going to look like.
Seeing 9-year-old me again felt like an unexpected reminder of who I was before all the stress and self-doubt." Davis quickly realized the camera had previously belonged to Ryan Houser, 36, of North Carolina. He owned the camera between 2012 and 2013, using it to capture many of his college experiences, road trips, and travels. During that time, he visited Davis and the rest of her fourth-grade class to give a presentation about the Appalachian Trail, which was when the photo was taken.
Davis was able to connect with Houser and returned the memory card to him. Speaking to Newsweek about the unexpected turn of events, Houser said it was “incredibly lucky” that the camera ended up in the hands of someone who knew him. While many of his images were already backed up on an external drive, he was delighted to get his original copies back.
Naturally looking through the photos brings me a wave of nostalgia,” Houser said. Following the discovery, Davis shared a post on TikTok (@hayleeadavis) detailing how the random purchase at an estate sale led to a beloved childhood memory. Needless to say, social media users cannot get enough of what she uncovered, generating over 8.9 million views and 933,700 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
Davis joked that the “universe is funny sometimes” and this memento was a welcome reminder of her childhood joy. I’ve been going through a lot of anxiety and self-doubt about what comes next and seeing that little girl again reminded me of the person I was before I started worrying so much about having everything figured out. She was creative, excited about life, and had the whole world ahead of her.
