Jacob Cowing is making a strong case for himself at exactly the right time. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is competing for one of the final spots in a revamped receiver room, and his work on special teams could end up being what separates him from the competition. Cowing had a big moment last weekend against the Los Angeles Chargers, returning a punt 83 yards for a touchdown.
It's the kind of play that gets noticed right away, especially for a player trying to secure his place on the 53-man roster. Cowing missed the entire last season because of a hamstring injury. The fourth-round pick from the 2024 draft is now entering his third year and needs to show he can get back on track.

Cowing has made a strong case to become San Francisco's primary punt returner. If he can secure that role on special teams, it could put him ahead of free-agent addition Christian Kirk when the 49ers make their final roster decisions.
Kirk has missed significant time during training camp while dealing with a calf strain. He also has limited experience on special teams, which could work against him when San Francisco has to trim its roster. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has stopped short of saying Cowing has won the punt-returner job, but he did acknowledge that Cowing is "making it easier" on the upcoming decision.
That 83-yard touchdown return certainly gives him another strong argument. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report named Cowing a "winner" in the preseason, pointing to the wide receiver's push for a bigger role and his ability to contribute on special teams.
