Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) stock soared on Aug. 12 after the company announced a $22 million follow-on production order from its lead artificial intelligence (AI) processor customer for its automated wafer-level test systems. Investors are cheering AEHR primarily because the contract underscores accelerating demand for specialized screening solutions required during high-volume AI chip manufacturing. The FREE Barchart Brief newsletter keeps you in the know. AEHR shares have been nothing short of a blockbuster investment in 2026, currently trading at about 5x their price at the start of this year. The follow-on production order includes multiple fully automated FOX-XP wafer-level burn-in (WLBI) systems, proprietary FOX WaferPak contactors, and integrated Auto Aligners.

Designed to test nine 300mm wafers simultaneously, these systems will be shipped over the next six months for installation at the client's high-volume foundry partner in Taiwan. Crucially, Aehr's top executive Gayn Erickson highlighted that the customer's production roadmap also requires capacity beyond this purchase, and other chipmakers and hyperscalers are evaluating the firm's benchmark testing as well. Complex AI architectures, integrating high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and multi-die packaging, require early stress testing to eliminate early-life failures before expensive final testing.

The news is bullish for AEHR stock because it signals expanding demand for its automated wafer-level burn-in systems while strengthening its prospects of securing additional orders from existing and new customers. All in all, the announcement reinforces the firm's position in the AI manufacturing supply chain. Investors are still advised to exercise caution in chasing the momentum in AEHR shares, and to buy only on pullbacks because of valuation concerns.

The semiconductor equipment manufacturer is trading at about 212x forward earnings at writing, which makes it expensive by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, AEHR's relative strength index (RSI) currently sits in the late 60s, signaling the stock is now approaching overbought levels, which often trigger profit-taking in the near term. Caution is warranted also because Wall Street now views AEHR stock as overvalued as well.

While the consensus rating on Aehr Test Systems remains at "Strong Buy," the mean price target of about $115 actually signals potential downside from current levels.
