A'ja Wilson Makes WNBA History With 2026 MVP Honor

A'ja Wilson won the WNBA MVP award for a fifth time after a historic 2026 season.

Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson is the WNBA MVP for a record fifth time in her career. She's currently playing in her ninth WNBA season, meaning she's won the MVP award more than half the seasons she's played in. Wilson also has now won three MVP awards in a row, marking the first time in WNBA history that a player has achieved a three-year streak of winning the award.

She already beat the league record last year by winning her fourth MVP to hold the most in WNBA history. Three players — Lisa Leslie, Lauren Jackson and Sheryl Swoopes — won the award three times in their careers. It doesn't come as a surprise that Wilson was named MVP again this year.

She made history over and over again throughout the season. The 30-year-old became the first W player ever to average 25 points per game along with posting 50% on shooting and 40% on three-pointers this season. Her 26.2 points per game average is the second-best in all-time WNBA history, trailing only her own record of 26.9 points per game she recorded during the 2024 season.

At this rate, the WNBA might as well put Wilson's name in the title of the history book. And, Wilson's 2026 season isn't even over yet. The Aces remain in the WNBA playoff semifinals series against the Golden State Valkyries.

The Valkyries lead the series 2-0, meaning they could sweep the Aces if they win Game 3 on Friday. But, you can never fully count out Wilson. Wilson's won three WNBA titles with the Aces in her eight previous years, including last season.

She was named the WNBA Finals MVP in 2023 and '25, and she could easily add a third occurrence this year if the Aces reach the Finals. It was not a unanimous vote for Wilson as she received 65 first-place votes and nine second-place votes. Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles received the second-most votes with six, followed by the Indiana Fever's Kelsey Mitchell receiving two and Caitlin Clark getting one.
