The events could offer clues about which political messages resonate.

New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vice President JD Vance will make competing appearances in Michigan on Thursday as they campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican rival Mike Rogers, respectively, injecting national political star power and potential 2028 presidential intrigue into one of the country's most closely watched races. Vance is scheduled to headline a Trump 47 Committee rally in Monroe, Michigan, while Ocasio-Cortez will join El-Sayed for events in Iron Mountain and Marquette. In a statement announcing the campaign swing, Ocasio-Cortez said El-Sayed had "built a winning coalition with an agenda to bring down costs for Michigan families" and said she was excited to join him during the final stretch of the race.

El-Sayed welcomed the endorsement, calling Ocasio-Cortez a "critical partner" during the primary and saying he looked forward to campaigning with her in the closing weeks. Vance's appearance comes as Republicans seek to shore up support in one of the country's most closely watched Senate races. During an earlier Michigan visit alongside Rogers, Republican National Committee spokesman Hunter Lovell said that "President Trump and Vice President JD Vance are leading the charge to elect a powerhouse Republican ticket in Michigan." Newsweek contacted the campaigns of El-Sayed and Rogers for comment.

Michigan, a perennial presidential battleground, is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate battlegrounds in the country, helping determine which party controls the chamber after the midterm. The dueling appearances by Ocasio-Cortez and Vance give Michigan voters a rare chance to compare two of the most prominent younger voices in their respective parties. The events could offer clues about which political messages resonate in a state that has repeatedly played a decisive role in national elections.

Democratic strategist Joel Payne told The Hill that Michigan's Senate race could have implications well beyond November. "The one race in 2026 that will impact what happens in 2028 is the Michigan Senate race," he said, adding that the contest "will set the tone for the 2028 primary field." A July Michigan poll found Ocasio-Cortez polling third among prospective 2028 Democratic presidential contenders, behind only former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Senator Jon Ossoff, while finishing ahead of California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris. More than 20 percent of respondents were undecided.

Six polls conducted in late September and early October have given El-Sayed a lead from between 1 and 7 percentage points. The newest, an InsiderAdvantage survey of 1,200 likely voters conducted October 9-10, put El-Sayed at 48 percent and Rogers at 46 percent, with 5 percent undecided. Wedgewood Polls was in the field the two days prior and put El-Sayed at 53 percent to Rogers' 47 percent among 607 likely voters.

Other recent surveys showed a race inside the margin of error. Quantus Insights found El-Sayed up 48 percent to 47 percent among 744 likely voters polled October 5-6. YouGov, working with a much larger sample of 3,947 likely voters September 22-October 4, also landed on a one-point gap, 49 percent to 48 percent.
