Bengals Get Injury Scare as Ja’Marr Chase Exits Jaguars Game With Head Injury

Ja'Marr Chase left the Bengals game against the Jaguars after suffering a scary-looking head injury in the first half.

Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals were looking to get back on track at home after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, but they lost one of their top offensive weapons, Ja'Marr Chase, in the first half. With just over 12 minutes left in the second quarter, Burrow connected with Chase on a pass. Chase then started to advance with the ball, and a Jaguars defender quickly grabbed him by the facemask, twisting Chase's helmet awkwardly.

Another Jaguars defender jumped on Chase when he was already down. The play resulted in two flags against Jacksonville: one for the initial facemask and another for the unnecessary hit on Chase. Chase remained on the field as teammates checked on him.

Medical personnel eventually came out to check on him, and moments later, he walked off the field on his own. However, Chase soon entered the medical tent and didn't return to the game. Before leaving the game, the five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver had three catches for 27 yards and no touchdowns. This season, Chase has 18 catches for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Tee Higgins leads the Bengals in receiving yards so far and was also among the league's top 10 receivers entering today's game.

With Chase now going into concussion protocol, his return timeline remains unclear. He could miss at least the next game, if not more, with his status likely to become clearer later this week. Chase has been mostly healthy throughout his NFL career, although he missed five games in 2022 after aggravating a hairline fracture in his hip.

Losing Chase for one or more games could be significant for the Bengals, although their next opponent is the Miami Dolphins, who entered Sunday winless through their first three games. Cincinnati follows that game with an Oct. 25 matchup against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
