UK art-rock sextet Blue Bendy will release their sophomore album One Day This Will All Be Lore early next year, and we've already posted lead single "Dragonslayer." Yesterday, the band shared "Vocal Fry Academia," a drawling, self-aware, wordplay-heavy track that builds from an ornate ballad to a swirling hyperpop attack. The lyrics seem to concern the fleeting nature of extremely niche fame: "Whatever happened to bendycore? Probs hit the grave seven or eight microtrends ago." Here's what lead singer Arthur Nolan says about it: For the first time ever, started with the title (a clear albeit opaque idea) and then worked backwards.

Never done it before, not sure I'll ever have the foresight to do it again. Another navel-gazing anthem that wants to have its memetic flowers and distance itself from the culture as much as possible. It’s all just isolated parasocial self-loathing and performative vanity.

There’s probably a lot more where that came from. In the meantime, I think we should just all embrace the nihilistic reality of "being the best you, you can be." Keyboardist Olivia Morgan directed the song's cryptic, cinematic video. In a press release, she says: This video was another experiment.

After making a sort of essay/collage for "Dragonslayer," I wanted to try and write more of a story for "Vocal Fry Academia" and get some friends involved to act in it. It was a lot of experimentation and learning things on the fly, and it highlighted to me how much musicians and artists rely on friendships and helping each other out to make things work. Thanks so much to everyone who was involved!

Directing this many people while also shooting was terrifying but ultimately really fun and exciting. The video is sort of a homage to David Lynch, as well as a homage to the friends I got to perform in it. One Day This Will All Be Lore is out 1/29/27 on Practise Music.
