The A's are looking at members of the Brewers, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox and Cardinals front offices to succeed David Forst.

Major League Baseball teams that regularly reach the postseason are familiar with a particular price of success: their front-office personnel are often interviewed, and occasionally poached, by rival teams for their own executive vacancies. The New York Mets hired longtime Brewers executive David Stearns to be their president of baseball operations prior to the 2024 season. And while Stearns' results in Queens have been mixed, the Brewers have kept right on rolling.

Now, another Brewers executive is drawing interest from a rival team. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine is on a short list of candidates to succeed David Forst as the A's chief of baseball operations. Forst was fired in August after 27 seasons with the organization that currently calls West Sacramento, California home.

The A's are searching for a permanent replacement while their permanent home in Las Vegas, Nevada remains under construction. The Brewers promoted Kleine to assistant general manager in November 2023.

A collegiate baseball player at DePauw University, Kleine joined the Brewers as an associate scout in 2007, a position he held until 2009. He has also served roles as baseball operations and amateur scouting intern (2009-11), baseball operations assistant (2011-2013), coordinator of advance scouting and baseball contracts (2013-14), manager of baseball operations (2014-17), director of baseball operations (2018-19) and vice president of baseball operations (2020-23). Louis Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio, according to Rosenthal, but he is expected to stay in St. Louis — possibly as general manager under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom. The A's went 64-98 in 2026, finishing in fourth place in the AL West.
