The Kansas City Chiefs brought in veteran kicker Justin Tucker to help Harrison Butker during practice this week after Butker missed two critical field goals in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7. On Sunday, Butker's woes continued. He missed a 54-yard field goal attempt with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Chiefs leading the Denver Broncos 24-21.
The Broncos would go on to take a 28-24 lead (the game's final score) on a two-play drive that went 56 yards. Butker went 1 of 2 on field goal attempts and made all three of his extra point attempts. He's missed six field goal attempts this season, which is a career-worst for Butker. Before Sunday's game, Butker had made just 68.8% of his field goal attempts through the Chiefs’ first six games, which was on pace for the worst percentage of his 10-year career. Butker told reporters after the game that he had a great week of practice, per video posted to X by James Palmer of Bleacher Report.
He knew the 54-yard field goal attempt came off his foot wrong. Last week, Chiefs special teams head coach Dave Toub told reporters that Kansas City has faith in Butker as its kicker. He went 10-for-10 during Wednesday's practice.
That’s what this whole thing is about. He went 10-for-10 yesterday with Tucker standing right there. On a windy day, it was 28-mile-an-hour gusts yesterday, and he went 10-for-10." The Chiefs have now lost two consecutive games.
Butker played a considerable role in the defeats. For more on the Chiefs and the NFL, head toNewsweek Sports.
