After the disappointing, and embarrassing, 26-20 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard on Monday. Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said "a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard" of competing for championships. It was clear to the organization that Ballard wasn't helping meet that goal." As the Colts now sit at 2-4, the organization will be on the hunt for a new general manager.
So, who are some of the options to replace Ballard? Sports radio personality Dan Patrick has an idea for one person the team should look at: former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. And, the Colts may already be on the same wavelength.
Patrick received a message from a source close to the situation, which he read on his show on Monday. "The Colts' first call will be/has been to Peyton Manning," Patrick read. "The call will not only get names and suggestions, but the call will explore whether or not Peyton would be interested in being a general manager for the Colts as the entry point.
That would include ownership interest in the Colts." Patrick previously talked to the late owner Jim Irsay about hiring Manning as the general manager, but Irsay wasn't interested at the time. But, it seems like now would be a much better time. The Colts clearly need a boost of something, whether that's confidence or experience or something else.
Manning would provide all of those things and more as he's seen as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He understands the Colts way as he spent 13 seasons as the team's starting quarterback. He even led the team to a Super Bowl win.
His tenure in Indianapolis led the organization to retiring his No. 18 jersey and earning him a spot in the team's Ring of Honor. He would be the perfect fit to take over a struggling team. The Indianapolis community would 100% be down to having Manning return in a major role within the Colts organization.
