The Dallas Cowboys defense gave up the most points last year, and there hasn't been a major turnaround seen on that side of the ball through the first three weeks of the regular season this year. Dallas averaged giving up 30.1 points per game last season. The Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and hired Christian Parker to replace him.
Dallas spent their first three picks in the draft helping the defense with safety Caleb Downs, edge Malachi Lawrence and edge Jaishawn Barham. The results through the first three weeks are lacking. Dallas has given up 82 points, the 25th-most in the league.
The Cowboys have surrendered 1,161 yards, the third-worst in the NFL (only better than the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions). Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys signed safety Juanyeh Thomas, who played for Dallas in 2025.
"Sources: The Cowboys are signing S Juanyeh Thomas, bringing him back to where his NFL career began," Schultz posted on X. "Thomas joined Dallas as an undrafted free agent and played in 36 games from 2022-2025, recording 62 tackles, 5 PBUs and 1 forced fumble." Thomas will help a Cowboys defense that ruled out safeties Malik Hooker (forearm) and P.J. Locke (foot) before their 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
Safety Jalen Thompson is expected to miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury he suffered against the Ravens. The injuries are piling up in the secondary at a time when the Cowboys need a winning Week 4. The upcoming schedule for Dallas includes three consecutive games against teams who were expected to be playoff contenders but have struggled in the early season.
Dallas will travel to play the 0-3 Houston Texans on Sunday before hosting the 0-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 5.
