This past weekend, the No. 1 Texas Longhorns went to Knoxville, Tennessee, and defeated the Volunteers in a hard-fought battle, 20-17. During the matchup, Texas defensive end Colin Simmons sacked Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon, then opted for an unnecessary celebration. After recording his sack, he made a vulgar gesture, pretending to unzip his pants and urinate on the field.
On the "Triple Option" podcast, legendary college football coach Urban Meyer, now an analyst at Fox Sports, discussed the celebration with his co-hosts, and they all expressed their disgust over what they saw. "If I'm the head coach and I see that kid do that, he's suspended," Meyer, former head coach of the Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes, said during this week's podcast. He called out quarterback Arch Manning for his insensitive comment at a press conference about Holly Rowe weeks ago, and Simmons for "marking his spot" on the field with the vulgar celebration.
"And that's on you too, Sark," Stone said about Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. "Like, get your business in order." Manning's comment arrived after Texas's big comeback win over the former No. 1 team, the Ohio State Buckeyes. After the game, ABC/ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe waited to get an on-field interview with Sarkisian.
However, technical difficulties delayed the television crew from cutting to Rowe and Sark. When their cameras finally cut to them, Sark yelled a few words in support of his team and did the "Hook 'em Horns" hand gesture before rushing off to join his team. Rowe looked frustrated at being unable to get more of an interview.
It led to backlash toward Sarkisian after the game, although ESPN clarified that the Texas coach had been waiting, and they apologized to him for the delay. At a press conference a day or so after the game, Manning joked about seeing an AI-generated video showing his head coach slapping Rowe and even called the AI-generated clip "hilarious." According to ESPN, Manning apologized for his "insensitive comment," saying, "There is nothing funny about it." Rowe shared on her social media that she appreciated him reaching out privately and that they were moving on from this incident. For Simmons, his recent vulgar celebration against Tennessee drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and it appears that Texas left it at that.
