Deion Sanders Drops Cryptic Comment on Julian Lewis After Loss to Texas Tech

Deion Sanders is hinting there's more to the Julian Lewis benching than meets the eye as Colorado rides a three-game losing skid.

Colorado has lost three straight and looks as bad as it has at any point in the Deion Sanders era. The Buffaloes fell 29-7 at home Saturday to Texas Tech, an undefeated team that has been quickly rising in the rankings, to be fair. But Colorado was also beaten 41-7 at Northwestern and 23-13 at Baylor in their previous two games, and their only wins this season came against Georgia Tech and Weber State.

Saturday's loss generated a significant amount of attention because of Colorado's inability to finish drives. The Buffaloes outgained the Red Raiders 375 yards to 315 but scored just seven points, all in the first quarter. Isaac Wilson, who took over after Julian Lewis was benched in the Baylor game, got the start and finished 26 of 44 for 290 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions.

There may be more to the Lewis benching than meets the eye, though. "I would love JuJu to come here, and he'll tell you what happens," Sanders told a reporter when asked about the benching. "That's not how it went down.

It didn't happen like that." "It's always an open competition. Every darn day is an open competition," he added when asked if the job is up for grabs between Wilson and Lewis. "That's the position that is somewhat disabling us and dishonoring us." He chose the Buffaloes over more than 30 offers from top programs, including Indiana, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and Texas. After backing up Kaidon Salter as a freshman, this was supposed to be the season Lewis broke out and cemented himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college football. Instead, through four games, he's completed just 64.3% of his passes for 733 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions, much of it coming in a 366-yard performance against Weber State in the home opener.

Wilson, a junior who just transferred from Utah, has arguably looked even worse, leaving Colorado without a clear answer at the most important position in the sport.
