Donald Trump's Rally Suit Under Scrutiny

The suit appeared to be a stark departure from the president's usual higher-end choice.

During a campaign rally in Nebraska on Monday night, the president gave everyone a rare insight into something personal—his wardrobe. Trump was in Grand Island, Nebraska, to support incumbent Senator Pete Ricketts who faces a competitive challenge from independent Dan Osborn in the upcoming November midterm elections. Trump has been synonymous with a smart suit since he entered the public eye as a young businessman in the 1980s.

Before entering politics, Trump even licensed his own Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, a menswear line that included suits, dress shirts and accessories sold through major retailers. During the 2000s and his years hosting The Apprentice, Trump became closely associated with Italian luxury label Brioni.

But, on stage on Monday, the president revealed that his suit was made by affordable menswear brand Jos. Bank, a departure from his usual higher-end choice. Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment and is awaiting a response.

As President Trump showed off the internal label of his suit, keen-eyed watchers were quick to point out that it bore the label of Jos. Bank, an American retailer established in Maryland in 1905. Owned by parent company Tailored Brands, which also owns Men's Wearhouse and K & G Fashion Superstores, Jos.

Bank carries a range of suits from the very affordable—starting at $149.99 to their higher-end American Bespoke line retailing at around $700. Newsweek reached out to Tailored Brands via email for comment and is waiting for a reply. The exact suit has not been confirmed, but the price point remains a stark difference from Trump’s usual favored suit brand, Brioni suits, which range from $5,500 to over $16,000.

Trump's decision to showcase the suit comes as Tailored Brands pursues a return to the public markets after emerging from bankruptcy in 2020. In April, the company submitted paperwork for a proposed initial public offering before publicly filing its registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission in July. The proposed offering has not yet been completed.
