In the late '90s, the Idaho-born linguistic maniac known as doseone helped pioneer a certain kind of skittery, moody avant-rap. He took part in entities like the Anticon Collective, cLOUDDEAD, Themselves, Subtle, 13 & God, and the Nevermen, moving further and further from regular underground rap circles all the while. But last year, doseone made a grand return, teaming up with present-day underground producer steel tipped dove on the Backwoodz Studioz album All Portrait, No Chorus.
Now, doseone seems to be all the way back in. Since the release of All Portrait, No Chorus, doseone has been in a prolific zone. He teamed up with Baltimore DIY great Height Keech for last year's Wood Teeth EP, then for a sequel earlier this year.
Just last month, he released sighting, a full-length collab with producers Wino Willy and Zetroc. Now, doseone and steel tipped dove have made another album together, and now they've brought fellow rap weirdo Fatboi Sharif into the fold. You should already know Fatboi Sharif, the prolific New Jersey rap iconoclast and onetime Stereogum Artist To Watch.
Sharif releases music all the time, including collaborative records with Child Actor and ELUCID earlier this year. Sharif has worked with steep tipped dove many times over the years, and he and doseone make a perfectly natural pairing, their different kinds of jaggedness complementing each other. The resulting LP Truth Ugly is some real way-out shit, just as you'd expect.
