Wizards of the Coast revealed the first details on the upcoming Star Wars expansion for Dungeons and Dragons.

After announcing a Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons crossover in July, Wizards of the Coast just provided the first concrete details about this TTRPG collaboration at New York Comic Con. The expansion will be made up of two main elements: an adventure (Wizards of the Coast's term for pre-written campaigns) called Star Wars Tyro Squadron: Adventures and the D&D | Star Wars Core Rules book. The company also revealed the expansion's cover and concept art.

"Set during the Original Trilogy, these new stories unfold as Luke and Leia fight their own battles across the galaxy. Fly daring missions, explore new corners of the galaxy, and help shape the Rebellion’s story—your way.” It sounds like the story will focus on scrappy scoundrels battling the Empire instead of Jedi from a “more civilized age.” While Wizards of the Coast didn’t offer specifics on the Core Rules book and what mechanical changes will be made to make blasters and lightsabers work in D&D, the company said that it will reveal more information soon. Both the adventure and rules expansion are set for release in 2027.

This Star Wars collaboration is the second major Dungeons & Dragons crossover under the Universes Beyond banner, after D&D: World of Warcraft. The World of Warcraft expansion promises to let players “explore beloved zones, delve through familiar dungeons, and face legendary foes from over 20 years of history for the World of Warcraft franchise.” Beyond the WoW expansion's core sourcebook, there’s also the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack, which includes poster-sized maps, tokens, and a “digital adventure.” The World of Warcraft-themed additions arrive on Nov. 17. WotC first introduced Universes Beyond in 2021 as a crossover brand for Magic: The Gathering, where it has proven quite controversial.

Many existing players hate Universes Beyond for contributing to the Fortnite-ification of the card game and for fueling an expensive, overwhelming number of card releases. We’ve seen crossovers with Warhammer 40,000, Marvel, Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, and even SpongeBob SquarePants. That said, the brand has also proven lucrative enough for Wizards of the Coast that it probably isn’t going anywhere.
