Elon Musk Blasts ‘Musk’ Documentary as a ‘Hit Piece’ and Director Alex Gibney as a ‘Horrible Human’: ‘Dogs— Is Worth More Respect’

Elon Musk has spoken out about Alex Gibney‘s four-hour documentary on him, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, calling it a “hit piece” that’s “boring.” “Musk,” which earned a four-minute standing ovation at its premiere and a slew of positive reviews, seeks to make sense of the world’s richest man and the outsized influence he has on the world. It dives deep into Musk’s shift to MAGA supporter, controversies surrounding his Occupy Mars mission and Tesla’s self-driving cars and his contentious relationships with several of his 14 children’s mothers. Musk began replying to posts on X about the documentary on Wednesday, writing under a video of Gibney at the movie’s press conference that “dogshit is worth more respect” than the Oscar-winning documentarian.

He claimed in a separate reply that Gibney had “just assembled a hit list of people who either have an axe to grind or don’t even know me (but still have an axe to grind),” adding: “He has ZERO integrity. Horrible human.” The “Musk” documentary features interviews with his first wife, Justine Musk; his father, Errol Musk; Ashley St. Clair, the mother of his 13th child; Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI”; Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard; LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and more.

Clair appeared on the press conference panel at Venice and alleged that she had been offered a $40 million NDA by Musk after the birth of their child, Romulus, last year. Replying to a TMZ article about St. Clair’s statement, Musk said: “She was never offered that and has a history of making false claims.” In a further reply, Musk called the doc “a hit piece that misses, and makes the fatal sin of being boring for 4 hours.” He also called the film a “hit piece” back in 2023, when it was first announced.

It is unclear if Musk has seen the documentary. At the film’s press conference, Gibney said that the first thing he did was try to interview Musk, but he declined. Instead, Gibney and his team developed an AI avatar of Musk that delivers statements he has said during the film, which is set to release in U.S. theaters on Oct. 16 via Bleecker Street.

Representatives for “Musk” and Gibney did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
