Saturday night was not a great night to try and interview Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. Twice during Texas’ 24-23 win over Ohio State ESPN tried to speak with Sarkisian — once at halftime and again after the game ended — but both times he walked away before ESPN was able to ask a question. The halftime interview wasn’t a big deal, but after Sarkisian blew off sideline reporter Holly Rowe’s postgame interview, fans started ripping into Sarkisian for acting like a jerk.
Rowe also looked visibly frustrated and rolled her eyes, which likely fueled fans’ frustration with Sarkisian as well. However, ESPN issued a statement shortly after the incident that seemingly explained why Sarkisian was a little crotchety after the game ended. Laura Rutledge said there were technical difficulties during the halftime interview as well, which led to Sarkisian blowing it off to head to the locker room.
We should be apologizing to him, which we did.” In his defense, Texas trailed 20-3 at halftime, and few could blame Sarkisian for not wanting to wait around to be interviewed as opposed to trying to light a fire under his team. Whatever Sarkisian said to the Longhorns at halftime evidently worked. Texas held Ohio State to a lone field goal in the third quarter and it scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull off the come-from-behind upset win over the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
