The Atlanta Falcons sidelined a new member of their offense on Wednesday. Atlanta placed running back Trey Sermon on the injured reserve, as relayed by ESPN's Adam Schefter from the NFL's transaction wire. Sermon signed with the Falcons on Aug. 10 following a quiet 2025 stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The San Francisco 49ers drafted Sermon with a third-round pick in 2021 after playing college football at Oklahoma and Ohio State. He lasted just one season with the 49ers before getting traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he garnered two touches over two games in 2022. Sermon received more opportunities with the Indianapolis Colts.
After playing 14 games in 2023, he tallied a career-high 258 yards and two touchdowns on 72 touches the following year. Yet he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry in 17 games. As a member of Pittsburgh's practice squad, Sermon played four games without logging a single touch last season.
Playing nearly exclusively on special teams, he returned two kickoffs for 51 yards in a Week 4 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. The Falcons signed the Georgia native last week, adding depth to a running back room led by Bijan Robinson. They lost their second-string rusher, Tyler Allgeier, to the Arizona Cardinals after an eight-touchdown campaign.
Atlanta responded by signing Brian Robinson Jr. and Tyler Goodson earlier this offseason. Nathan Carter also returns after playing seven games for the Falcons as an undrafted rookie. Seeking their first winning record and playoff berth since 2017, the Falcons will begin the 2026 season on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 13.
