NFL officiating has been under fire for years, but through the first four games of the 2026 season, things seem to have gotten particularly out of hand. Several players, including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, among others, seem to get preferential treatment from certain officials, while others don’t quite get the benefit of the doubt on certain plays. After Sunday’s Arizona Cardinals-New York Giants game, the officials were again subject to frustration by fans on social media after videos emerged of one referee shouting obscenities at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride.
F--- you,” one ref was seen yelling at McBride after a play. Fans were quick to flood the comment section with their opinion of what should happen to the official, with many pointing out had the roles been reversed and McBride swore at the ref, he would’ve likely been penalized with a flag and have a fine coming his way. It’s painfully obvious what’s been going on the last few years,” one user replied.
It’s unlikely the ref will be punished for his behavior toward McBride, but the NFL may address the issue with a statement sometime on Monday.
