The "Soccer in Sanford" match was honoring the 30th anniversary of the United States women's national team defeating China to win the gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics.
The gold-medal game took place at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. That game attracted a crowd of 76,489 people, which at the time was a world record attendance for a women's sporting event. Georgia's attendance at Thursday's game was especially impressive because it was an early non-conference game.
The previous women's record (14,410) was set in the 1999 NCAA championship game between North Carolina and Notre Dame at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California. The Bulldogs and the Dukes also do not have a long-standing rivalry. Meanwhile, the men's record (22,512) was set in a game between Saint Louis and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in October 1980.
Taking place at Busch Stadium, these crosstown rivals were competing in the 11th Annual Bronze Boot Game. It was annual rivalry game that regularly drew in large crowds.
