The New York Giants wide receiver corps was already hit hard by injuries, which makes Wednesday’s news even harder to hear. With star wide receiver Malik Nabers still recovering from a devastating ACL injury suffered last season, another Giants WR went down with the exact same injury in practice this week. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that free-agent addition Calvin Austin III tore his ACL and would miss the entire 2026 season.
The 27-year-old Austin was expected to play a big role in offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s scheme. Austin totaled 84 catches, 1,100 yards, and eight touchdowns across 48 games during his three-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His injury is even more of a gut-punch to New York’s offense because of Robinson’s departure (he led the team with 92 catches, 1,014 yards, and four touchdowns last season) and the fact that nobody really knows when Nabers will be back on the field.
Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters earlier this week that “it’s reasonable” to say Nabers could play in Week 1. The 23-year-old wideout was practicing without a non-contact jersey this week, and Harbaugh seemed optimistic with what he’s seen from Nabers. He had the red shirt off — that was a good step.” As things sit now, the Giants WR depth chart consists of Mooney, Darius Slayton, and rookie Malachi Fields at the top.
