New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that JJ McCarthy will start in Sunday's Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans. McCarthy, who the Giants acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this year, stepped in after Jameis Winston threw his second interception in Week 6's loss to the New Orleans Saints. Through just one quarter of action, McCarthy threw for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception — enough to land him the starting job moving forward.
Winston addressed his demotion when speaking to reporters on Wednesday. "I'm extremely grateful that I still get to do what I love, and that's play football at a high level for the New York Football Giants. Being able to accept roles and understand, 'How can I be the best at my role with this team?'" Winston said.
"You move forward by continuing to focus on what you love," he added. "Pointing to those around me, impacting them in the best way I can." Winston is supportive of McCarthy as he steps into his new role. "[He's] someone that came in, took the position by the horns, and executed very well.
He's embraced a fresh start, coming from Minnesota and now here," Winston said. "I know what it is to feel like you have a chance to start over again." The Giants will kick off against the Texans at 1 p.m.
