After a promising start to their season with a big home-opening win against the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants had a disastrous Week 2 in which they not only lost to the Los Angeles Rams, but also lost quarterback Jaxson Dart. The unfortunate news after the game was that Dart could miss the entire season. With that, the Giants have limited options, as Jameis Winston replaced him in Monday's game against the Rams and couldn't do much with the offense.
Winston completed 11 of 27 passes for 127 yards and no touchdowns, with an interception. The Rams' defense also got to him, sacking him twice amid the Giants' attempts to get anything going. After they looked like early contenders with a healthy Dart, Winston may or may not help the Giants stay afloat.

McCarthy, in theory, could come to the Giants, play well and then have trade value somewhere else," Mike Greenberg said during ESPN's "Get Up." Greenberg suggested it would be hard to see McCarthy doing well enough to take Dart's job away when he returns. However, Greenberg said the team has to get through 15 weeks of misery, possibly with Jameis Winston as their only starting quarterback option. McCarthy wasn't considered a success under Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota, so it would be surprising if he could lead the Giants to the postseason.
New York has a new head coach, with John Harbaugh hired this offseason, and McCarthy would have to quickly get up to speed with a new offense and personnel. In 10 starts last season, he was 6-4. He completed 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns, but also had 12 interceptions.
While the Vikings were strong to finish the season, McCarthy suffered various injuries throughout his season. Minnesota didn't qualify for the postseason, and this offseason, they signed veteran Kyler Murray to a one-year contract as their new starting QB. Another interesting point came up during the "Get Up" discussion: the Giants' season might just be so bad that they land a top pick in the NFL Draft.
