Hayden Panettiere Memoir Doubles in Price as Demand Surges

Barnes & Noble told Newsweek that the new price was "a solely stock-based decision."

Hayden Panettiere's memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning returned to its full $30 price at Barnes & Noble within days of the actor's death, after previously being advertised at 50 percent off as part of the retailer's Book Haul promotion. The title had been featured in promotional material for Barnes & Noble's Book Haul sale, which highlighted the memoir with a prominent "50% OFF!" label. But visitors to the retailer's website this week found the hardcover selling at its standard $30 list price.

The pricing change came as fans rushed to purchase the memoir following news of Panettiere's death. Released in May, the book saw the Heroes and Nashville star open up about growing up in the spotlight, addiction, recovery, postpartum depression, domestic abuse and the loss of her brother. Barnes & Noble told Newsweek the book's removal from the promotion was driven by soaring demand and dwindling inventory rather than a broader pricing decision.

"Removing this book from the promotion was a solely stock-based decision," a Barnes & Noble spokesperson told Newsweek. "We are now trying to order more to meet the increased demand as there is (unfortunately) renewed interest and attention with little to no stock in most stores." They explained: "Inventory is scarce across the market though we know the publisher is looking at printing more. It's important to note we add and remove titles frequently throughout Book Haul, both centrally and on the individual store level, though this book in particular has a very clear reason for a magnifying glass." The retailer said titles are routinely added to and removed from Book Haul promotions, but acknowledged that Panettiere's memoir has attracted unusual attention in recent days.

Before the change, This Is Me: A Reckoning had been featured in promotional material for Barnes & Noble's Book Haul sale with a prominent "50% OFF!" label. The promotion advertised the memoir as part of a limited-time event running between mid-August and early September. At the discounted rate, the $30 hardcover would have cost readers approximately $15.

However, visitors to Barnes & Noble's website this week found the memoir once again listed at its standard $30 retail price. The retailer did not indicate precisely when the title was removed from the promotion or how many copies remain available. Newsweek reached out to the book’s publisher via email for comment.

Published in May by Grand Central Publishing, This Is Me: A Reckoning was described as Panettiere's most personal work, detailing her experiences as a child actor and the challenges she faced away from the spotlight. The memoir chronicles the former Heroes and Nashville star's struggles with addiction, postpartum depression, domestic abuse and grief, while also reflecting on the pressures of growing up in Hollywood. Upon release, the book became a New York Times and USA Today bestseller and was praised for its candid discussion of fame and recovery.
