How Jeff Bezos' Earth Fund Benefits Compare With Amazon's Emissions

The Bezos Earth Fund has distributed roughly $2.4 billion since 2020 and pledged a total of $10 billion by 2030.

Jeff Bezos' climate philanthropy is back in the spotlight after the Bezos Earth Fund announced more than $25 million in new ocean conservation grants across five Pacific Island nations. This will support efforts to protect more than 625,000 square miles of ocean as part of the fund's broader $100 million "Unlocking Blue Pacific Prosperity" initiative to protect 30 percent of the region's waters by 2030. This summer I spent time in the Pacific, and the water was everything you’d imagine.

But what I keep coming back to is the people. Out there, the ocean isn’t just a beautiful view. It’s the road, the pantry, the backyard.

They’ve been protecting it for generations because their lives depend on it. Nobody had to explain the stakes to them. So, this is us backing what they’ve already been doing.

Protection that lasts for generations to come,” Lauren Sánchez Bezos, vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, said in a statement. However, the grants are coming at the same time there’s been heightened scrutiny of whether Bezos' environmental giving can really offset the environmental footprint of Amazon. While the Bezos Earth Fund has distributed roughly $2.4 billion since 2020 and pledged a total of $10 billion by 2030, Amazon's greenhouse-gas emissions climbed to 80.85 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2025, and environmental groups have continued to raise concerns about the company's contribution to plastic pollution that can harm marine ecosystems.

There’s been a larger debate over billionaire philanthropy in recent months. While the Bezos Earth Fund is directing billions of dollars toward climate solutions and ocean preservation, many question whether philanthropy can actually compensate for the environmental impacts of Amazon, a global retail and logistics titan that ships billions of packages annually. Newsweek reached out to Amazon for comment via email.

Bezos launched the Bezos Earth Fund in 2020 with a pledge to spend $10 billion combating climate change and protecting nature by 2030. The organization funds projects focused on clean energy, biodiversity, sustainable food systems, conservation, climate innovation and environmental research. Since 2020, around $2.4 billion has been awarded through more than 370 grants, leaving more than $7 billion still to be distributed before the end-of-decade deadline.
