Four long years, that’s how long my husband and I spent trying to get pregnant. It was far from easy, but we persisted with fertility treatments because we so desperately wanted a family of our own. There were times when hope was fleeting, but in 2023 everything changed for the better.
Finally, I was pregnant with our miracle baby, and because of the treatments, we found out really early. I was just three weeks pregnant when we learned the amazing news, so there was plenty of time to bask in that joy and excitement. Just two weeks later, I noticed this liquid that looked like blood leaking from my breast.
It was so strange, and my left breast started to swell up so much that I couldn’t even wear any of my bras. Not to mention, I couldn’t sleep on my front either because my breast hurt so much. Knowing that these were troubling signs, I went to my doctor for a second opinion.
They drained the liquid and tested it, and thankfully, the result showed that it wasn’t cancerous. One of the many times they had to drain the liquid, the ultrasound technician told the radiologist to also test my breast tissue. That moment would prove pivotal because although the liquid was not cancerous, my breast tissue was.
So, at just five weeks pregnant I was also diagnosed with stage two triple negative breast cancer. Just two weeks after finding out I was expecting, the bubble quickly burst. All the excitement was replaced with fear about what the future held for me and my baby.
Honestly, when I heard the words "you have cancer," I was terrified. I did not understand how I could have cancer when I was so young, otherwise healthy, and also pregnant. I was 25 and about to become a mom, how could I possibly have breast cancer?
