The WNBA has seen plenty of new stars emerging over the past few seasons, including the Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark, the Dallas Wings' Paige Bueckers, and the Atlanta Dream's Angel Reese. However, Phoenix Mercury All-Star Kelsey Plum recently revealed whom she believes could become the league's next superstar. During a conversation on "Girls Tripp," Plum offered high praise for Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams.
"WNBA fans are now getting a taste of who Gabby Williams is. Like, if you've played overseas or if you've watched Gabby for years, Gabby's been one of the best players in the world for the last four or five years," Plum said. The Mercury star indicated that Williams has evolved since joining the Valkyries.
Plum said that when Williams played for the Seattle Storm, "she never got the opportunity to ISO at the top of the key." Before the WNBA, Williams played for the UConn Huskies, led by coach Geno Auriemma, where she won back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016. She was the Chicago Sky's No. 4 pick in 2018, playing her first three years there. In the past two seasons, she's become a two-time All-Star and a two-time WNBA All-Defensive First Team selection. A WNBA championship could be the next achievement added to her resume. "It's awesome to see somebody who has basically just like waited her turn, that's always played the right way.
But Gabby's always been an extremely smart, competitive, play both sides of the ball, winning basketball player," Plum stated. Multiple factors could contribute to Williams' superstar potential. Along with playing for UConn, she's played overseas for multiple teams.
Williams represents France internationally and competed at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Plum suggested it seems like Golden State coach Natalie Nakase has thrown the keys to Williams to "take off." It appears that way based on Williams' performance this past season, as she averaged 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists for Golden State, which became the No. 2 seed in the WNBA Playoffs. From there, Williams helped lead her squad to the WNBA Finals, after she and the Valkyries swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, 3-0, in the semifinals.
