The 2026-27 NHL regular season kicks off on Tuesday, and we already have our first blockbuster trade of the campaign. The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Kirill Marchenko, Elvis Merzlikins, and Miles Wood from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Matthew Knies, Emil Andrae, Steven Lorentz, and a 2027 second-round pick. TSN's Pierre LeBrun also reported that the Maple Leafs and Marchenko have verbally agreed to a six-year, $12.5 million AAV contract extension as part of the trade.
Marchenko was the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, and he has now finally found his new home with the Maple Leafs. He is now expected to be a big part of the Maple Leafs' forward group, and this is especially so when looking at what they gave up to get him. The main piece that the Blue Jackets are getting back for Marchenko from the Maple Leafs is Knies.
Knies is a 23-year-old top-six power forward who has a $7.75 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. With this, he should now be a long-term part of the Blue Jackets' core as they aim to get things on track. The Maple Leafs bringing in Merzlikins and Wood is primarily due to salary cap reasons.
Andrae will now provide the Blue Jackets with another young defenseman with good upside, while Lorentz will give them another bottom-six forward to work with. Overall, this is a major trade, and it will be interesting to see which team ends up benefiting from it more.
