Maryland Embarrassingly Can't Fill Stadium With Free Tuition on the Line

All students who stayed through the entire game were entered in a raffle to win one semester's worth of tuition money.

The Maryland Terrapins offered an awesome raffle for fans attending Saturday's game against the Illinois Fighting Illini at SECU Stadium. Any fan who stayed through the fourth quarter of Saturday's game had their name in a drawing to receive free school tuition for next spring semester, worth $5,507.50. Who wouldn't want to pass that up?

Apparently thousands of students were willing to pass up that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in order to miss poor football. A picture was posted of SECU Stadium before Saturday's kickoff to show the embarrassing outing from Maryland fans. SECU Stadium was nowhere near packed before the game began.

And, it remained pretty empty throughout the contest. Despite the embarrassing showing, one lucky student still won the raffle. All of the students who remained in SECU Stadium by the end of the game had the chance to enter the raffle by scanning the QR code, and a mechanical engineering major named Bryce Hartle won the raffle, according to DC News Now's Alex Flum.

He was understandably emotional when he won the raffle. At least the promotion made one student's year. The Terrapins weren't as lucky.

Even though they were up 14-10 over Illinois in the third quarter, Maryland ended up losing 20-17 to fall 2-6 on the season. They sit 17th in the Big Ten standings. Maryland's season is going so poorly that the team and Mike Locksley came to a mutual decision on Oct. 21 for the head coach to step down.

Saturday marked the first game with interim coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim leading the Terrapins. Abdul-Rahim seemed confident in the Terrapins even after the loss. "The process doesn't have anything to do with the outcome," Abdul-Rahim said, via 247Sports.
