The New York Mets recalled left-handed reliever Jefry Yan from Triple-A in a four-man roster shuffle on Wednesday. Yan, 30, went viral for his eccentric, mid-game celebrations during spring training in 2025 when he played for the Colorado Rockies, and hasn't stopped with his signature celebration since. The Mets signed him to a minor league deal midway through 2025, and kept him in MiLB until August 2026 — when he made his MLB debut.
HIs actions on the mound during his 13-game stint in the majors caught national attention, with fans polarized by his antics. Alongside Yan, the Mets recalled right-hander Xzavion Curry from Triple-A while placing right-handers Robert Stock and Daniel Duarte on the 15-day injured list. Yan began using the celebration — which consists of a leap on the mound before he lands in a near-split position before slapping the ground—came to him during his time in NPB, where he played during the 2024 season.
Despite the negative attention it brings Yan, interim manager Andy Green likes the celebration and doesn't believe his opponents take it personally. I think they end up smiling at it if they’re not the one that’s getting punched out.” Yan played 13 games after coming to the majors in August, pitching 12.2 innings and striking out 17 batters. He posted a 5.68 ERA during his first MLB stint.
Most of his season so far has come in the minors, though, and he has solid numbers through 39 appearances across Double-A and Triple-A. Through 21 appearances in Double-A, he struck out 45 batters in 26.2 innings with a 3.71 ERA before bring promoted in June. He has 18 appearances under his belt with Triple-A Syracuse, and has 36 strikeouts across 17.1 innings pitched while posting a 2.08 ERA in those games.
Yan certainly has the strikeout potential to be an MLB pitcher, and will look to cement himself as one in his next stint with the Mets.
