Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was fired up during his postgame news conference after the No. 9 Aggies were upset by Kentucky on Saturday. First-year Wildcats head coach Will Stein earned a signature 31-21 win in front of 105,186 stunned fans at Kyle Field. Kentucky and Texas A&M were tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Wildcats took over the game in the third quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points.
The Aggies outscored Kentucky 14-3 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. He took responsibility for the loss.
"Hats off to Kentucky," Elko said, via video posted to X from Fox College Football. "They came in here and they beat our (expletive). Not good enough from us on any level: coaching, playing, performing, physicality, anything...
I'm in charge of it, and we have to get it fixed. "There's no positives--not an ounce of a positive anywhere. So there's a product that's not good enough that starts with me.
I did not do a good enough job of coaching this team, preparing this team, and getting this team ready to play this week. So I don't take any positives from this game." Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed struggled against a relentless Kentucky front seven that brought pressure all afternoon. He went 26 of 49 passing for 236 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
He added 80 yards and a score on the ground. Despite the Aggies playing poorly, Elko credited Kentucky for being better prepared. "I don't want to take anything away from Kentucky," Elko said.
