Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers is among the WNBA's brightest new stars and is breaking big records in just her second season in the league. On Saturday, Bueckers and the Wings defeated the visiting Phoenix Mercury, 87-82. In that game, the former UConn superstar made 10 of 19 field goals for 26 points.
Bueckers also dished out five assists, grabbed four rebounds, had three steals, and one block to lead the way in the win. With Saturday's performance, Bueckers scored her 1,515th career point. That is the new record for the most points scored by a WNBA player in their first two seasons.
The previous record was held by Minnesota Lynx's Seimone Augustus, who scored 1,513 points set in 2006-07, although the latter achieved the point total in 68 games as compared to Bueckers' 75. The league is definitely on notice for how much better she could get as she continues to develop and improve her game. She scored 20 points on Saturday in an impressive first-half performance in Dallas.
She'll get the chance to add more to that record as her team finishes its regular-season slate, with two games remaining before the postseason. While she struggled in her first season, things definitely improved for her sophomore season.
The team had the No. 1 pick for a second straight year, and they reunited her with former UConn teammate Azzi Fudd, whom she won a championship alongside. Fudd suffered a season-ending knee injury requiring arthroscopic surgery and will support her team from the sidelines during their playoff run. As of this report, the WNBA playoff matchups have not been announced, but Saturday's win was Dallas's sixth straight, which ties for the franchise's longest win streak.
The Wings are currently 26-10 and sitting in sixth place in the WNBA standings, and are 1.5 games behind the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream. Bueckers was last season's Rookie of the Year and made her second straight All-Star appearance this season. She's averaging 20.6 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game and has a 51.9% field goal percentage this season.
