At first glance, the Oculus Tower looks more like a futuristic arena than part of an old distillery. Rising from the remains of the former Eridania industrial complex in Ferrara, this seven-story circular concrete structure was once the heart of a large alcohol-production plant.

The tower's most striking feature is its enormous open center. The seven levels form a series of galleries around the void, which once housed distillation equipment. Above it, a large glass skylight—or oculus—flooded the interior with natural light.

Rows of windows punctuate the reinforced-concrete frame, giving the building an unexpected resemblance to a modern Colosseum. The distillery processed beet molasses into raw spirits, refined spirits, and denatured alcohol used in products ranging from liqueurs to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. After the industrial complex closed in the 2000s, much of the site was gradually demolished, leaving the circular tower as its most recognizable survivor.

Today, the Oculus Tower stands as an unusual piece of Italian industrial archaeology: monumental, geometric, and strangely theatrical, even without the machinery that once filled its vast interior. The former industrial complex has undergone extensive demolition and redevelopment, and the conditions around the remaining tower may change. Visitors should not assume that the site is open to the public or that access is permitted. The tower is best appreciated from a safe and legal vantage point, and anyone visiting the area should respect private property, barriers, and local restrictions.
