Oklahoma will need to take a long look in the mirror after a dreadful 41-13 loss to Georgia on Saturday in front of 93,033 fans at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. That could mean considering a quarterback change during the bye before the Sooners next play No. 1 Texas on Oct. 10 in the "Red River Rivalry." Oklahoma's offense has been criticized in recent weeks. The Sooners scored just 10 points in a loss to Michigan and defeated New Mexico 14-6 in Week 3.
Quarterback John Mateer has taken much of the blame. Against Georgia, Mateer went 25 of 34 passing for 231 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He lost two fumbles, including one in the red zone that was returned for a Georgia touchdown by Bulldogs linebacker Chris Cole.

Venables said it was discussed, but the staff opted not to make a change during the game. "It was something that we discussed," Venables said of benching Mateer, via video posted to X by Davis Cordova.
"But it's a conversation where you'll look at everything in how to get better." The Sooners have quarterbacks Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley on the roster. It remains to be seen if the coaching staff will opt to make a change before playing Texas. Mateer was expected to be one of the better quarterbacks in college football this year.
He had a strong start to the 2025 campaign before suffering a broken thumb against Auburn on Sept. 20. He finished the year completing 62.2% of his passes for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff. The Sooners already have two losses on their record before October, and the possibility for Mateer to lead the Sooners back to the CFP seems out of sight.
