Onosato's first title in a year provided the biggest boost of the Autumn Basho, while other strong performances point to a compelling future for sumo.
The 2026 Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, which at one point looked like an Onosato procession to silverware paired with an Aonishiki collapse, completely flipped the script over the final five days to give us a title showdown between the two men. It was the yokozuna who emerged victorious from that decider, dominating his younger rival and claiming a first Emperor’s Cup in a year. And while it was far from the most impressive of his six championships to date, the fact that Onosato, at key moments, looked back to his best, is a massive boost both to him personally and sumo in general.
