The Green Bay Packers are signing veteran tight end Jonnu Smith to a one-year deal, adding some depth to that position group ahead of the 2026 season. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the news on Thursday. The Packers will be the sixth team Smith has played for in 10 seasons in the NFL.
He previously played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans. Last season with the Steelers, Smith caught just 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns across 17 games. But in the season prior with the Dolphins, Smith earned the only Pro Bowl selection of his career after catching a career-high 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 games.
Across nine seasons in the NFL, Smith has scored 30 total touchdowns. Green Bay needed to add some depth to tight end room, especially as two key tight ends are overcoming injuries. Starting tight end Tucker Kraft underwent ACL surgery but is expected to be healthy for the Packers' season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 13.
Meanwhile, veteran tight end Luke Musgrave is recovering from a neck injury he sustained during June mini camp. The injury sidelined Musgrave for all of training camp, and he is still listed on the physically unable to perform list. The Packers were able to sign Smith after the Steelers released him in March.
