Packers-Lions Refs Under Fire for Controversial Roughing the Passer Penalty

There were multiple controversial calls made during the Packers-Lions showdown, including this one during a crucial moment.

It's always tense when two NFC North teams face each other, and it wasn't any different when the Detroit Lions hosted the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. There were plenty of controversial calls made by the officiating crew, causing an uproar from NFL fans on social media. Arguably the biggest questionable call, though, was made at a key moment in the game.

With just under three minutes left of the contest with the game tied at 17-17, the referees flagged Packers defensive tackle Karl Brooks for roughing the passer on Lions quarterback Jared Goff. Detroit gained 15 yards and were able to run down the field and expire the clock before making a last-second field goal to win the contest 20-17. The Packers recorded eight penalties to give the Lions 81 free yards on Sunday.

NFL legend and Fox commentator Tom Brady didn't hold back his thoughts on this call. Like most of the internet, Brady didn't believe there should've been a roughing the passer call. There's no way!" Brady said.

"Brooks on the tackle, kind of makes a great play. It's a bang-bang play, it rolls off his body. It's a great throw by Goff.

That's definitely not roughing the passer. You're just ripping through the line of scrimmage to try to get the quarterback on the ground. Look, I love Goff standing there in the pocket, but you can't just keep tacking on 15 yards." NFL fans online were up in arms regarding this roughing the passer penalty.

Even Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons, who has yet to make his 2026 season debut as he recovers from a torn ACL and a meniscus tear in his left knee from last season, tweeted during the game. "let’s just go to flag football if everytime a qb gets touched it’s roughing the passer!" he wrote, tagging the NFL and NFL officiating pages. Here's a look at some other tweets made by NFL media members on Sunday.
